Sale headquartered Stylea & Wood Group has overseen a £150k refurbishment of the restaurant area at Trafford General Hospital as part of its ‘Big Challenge’ charity initiative.

Sale-headquartered Stylea&Wood Group has overseen a £150k refurbishment of the restaurant area at Trafford General Hospital as part of its ‘Big Challenge’ charity initiative.

Each year the company offers support to local communities as part of its CSR strategy, giving employees, suppliers and subcontractors the opportunity to get involved by donating their time, materials or other resources to the project. For 2017 the company pledged an incredible £150k to completely transform the dated dining area at Trafford General Hospital into a new look ‘coffee lounge’ for staff, patients and their families to enjoy.

Work commenced on the refurbishment project in April 2017 with Styles & Wood taking a lead on the aesthetics and design of the restaurant, transforming the space into a modern, bright and welcoming area for patients, relatives and staff to have some time away from the more clinical ward environment. The project involved stripping out the existing kitchen, re-designing the layout with new partitions, replacing the flooring and installing new kitchen equipment.

The refurbishment was completed on 28th June with the Mayor of Trafford, Jonathan Coupe joining representatives from Styles & Wood and hospital staff to unveil the newly transformed kitchen space.

Andy Shaw, operations director at Styles&Wood, said:

“The Big Challenge was set up to deliver high quality pro-bono refurbishments around our headquarters in the North West. The project at Trafford General Hospital is a perfect example of what the initiative is designed to do. This redevelopment will provide calm environment and excellent new facilities for patients, visitors and staff.

“The works themselves were delivered by a 16-strong team while the hospital remained fully open. We wish everyone at Trafford General Hospital the best with the new space.”

Mary Burney, Divisional Director for Trafford Hospitals added:

“We’re absolutely delighted with the outcome of this project and are incredibly grateful that Styles&Wood opted to refurbish the restaurant at Trafford General Hospital. The new dining area is stunning and will make a huge difference to the patients and staff at the hospital, offering them an inviting area for them to relax away from the ward environment. Projects like this simply could not go ahead without the generous support from local businesses so we’d like to offer our sincerest thanks to Styles&Wood and the many sub-contractors who got involved for their generosity and dedication to this project.”

Joel is Corporate Sponsorship & Development Manager at the military charity, Walking With The Wounded.

His main responsibility is to deliver the charity’s corporate strategy and income objectives, and actively promote its values and activities.

Making a real difference

Established in 2010, Walking With The Wounded supports a pathway for vulnerable veterans to re-integrate back into society and sustain their independence. At the heart of this journey is employment.

We recognise the inherent skills of our armed service personnel and want to complement these qualities, as well as provide support to transfer their skills into the civilian workplace. We offer assistance through our programmes to those vulnerable veterans who have been physically, mentally or socially disadvantaged by their service and assist them in sustaining their independence through new sustainable careers outside of the military. This includes providing support to homeless veterans and veterans in the Criminal Justice System, areas which are too often ignored.

The outcome? Sustainable employment, and independence for them and their families.

Creating partnerships

The day to day duties of Joel`s role include securing sponsorship for key events, generating new corporate partnerships and account management of key corporate partnerships. ‘We aim to support those who have served in the Armed Forces and their families, empowering them to regain their independence, thrive and contribute in our communities.’

Nationwide support through our programmes

Our programmes each address a barrier to veterans reintegrating back into society. Head Start supports those with mental health difficulties, Project Nova works with veterans in police custody and our employment programme works with homeless veterans, or those at risk of being homeless, to support them into sustainable careers. These programmes are complimented by sector specific projects like Step Into Health which provides a pathway for veterans into careers with the NHS.

Our programmes work in harmony to support vulnerable, wounded, injured and sick veterans in their pathway to sustainable employment and regaining their independence.

Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital Charity is looking for organisations to take part in our Krypton Challenge.

Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital Charity is looking for organisations to take part in their Krypton Challenge. The Krypton Challenge, as you may have guessed, is based on the much-loved hit British game show – The Krypton Factor which was broadcast on ITV from 1977 to 1995. The theme is being reinvigorated for the business community and the charity is delighted to have the involvement of the show’s original host, Gordon Burns.

Spaces are limited so be sure to book your place as soon as possible!

Teams will undertake a total of eight exciting rounds taking place during an interactive dinner in the iconic Museum of Science and Industry on the 23rd September (7pm start). Most these rounds will involve using digital keypads at the gala dinner and will test the contestants on mental agility, general knowledge (current affairs) and observation.

In addition, there will be pre-filmed rounds recorded at the Etihad Campus on Monday 4th September 1pm – 5 pm and 5th September 8.30am – 5.30 pm. These will consist of the `Intelligence round` and the infamous ‘physical ability round’ – (don’t worry it’s pretty gentle!)

Teams already signed up to take part include ANS, Nuffield Health, Ryman, Betfred and Bruntwood.

How to enter

The event costs £2,500 per team of 5 players to enter (this can be raised through sponsorship) and this includes a table of 10, with the table including plus ones of the contestants, at the final dinner. The final dinner will include a champagne reception, a night hosted by celebrity presenter Gordon Burns, a three-course meal, interactive quiz, and auction.

Help us reach our target for the night - £100,000

All funds raised will go towards our Project: Heart Care for Children. This money will buy a new echo machine for the Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital’s Paediatric Cardiology out-patient department.

The Echo machine is similar to the machine which produces the ultrasound scans used in pregnancy, and is especially useful for diagnosing heart disease in new-born babies and children as it is painless and easy to do.

Having a brand new, state-of-the-art Echo machine, with cutting edge technology will allow our clinicians to obtain quicker and more accurate images. This new technology will reduce the length of time each scan takes, making the experience far less distressing for our young patients and allowing our clinicians to see more patients.

If you would like to take part in this event please contact [email protected] or call him on 0161 276 4601

As a not-for-profit business club, we not only regularly donate money to our designated charities but the club and its members continue to provide support and promotion throughout the year through other means.

Bowdon Business Club recently entered a team in the BBC quiz programme `Eggheads` using the team name “The Businessmen”

The episode, broadcast in 2014, saw the team of Gary Hutchings (Greenkey Ltd), Mark Haywood (The Decorating Company), Mark Slater (Wilson Fink), Tony Dagnall (Trafford Carers Centre) and Stuart Jamieson (CFI Labels) walk away with the jackpot of £41,000 after defeating the Eggheads in the final round.

The earlier head to head rounds saw victories for each of the Eggheads and left Tony, who has the charity seat at the business club, to take on the combined might of all five Eggheads on his own.

After answering each of his questions correctly the Eggheads tripped up on their final question, leaving the challengers delighted winners. Team members, including the reserve Chris Wrighton (Howard Sharp Accountants), agreed to donate part of their winnings to Trafford Carers Centre as part of the club’s ongoing support for the charity.

Photographs show the team at the Eggheads studio in Glasgow when the programme was recorded and presenting Trafford Carers Centre with a cheque for £3,466. (Team members are in order left to right as referred to above).

Clean water to rural Uganda https://www.bowdonbusinessclub.co.uk/bbc-members/item/300-clean-water-to-rural-uganda.html https://www.bowdonbusinessclub.co.uk/bbc-members/item/300-clean-water-to-rural-uganda.html Clean water to rural Uganda

Donations from Bowdon Business Club help to bring clean water to rural communities in Uganda.

Currently women and children walk 2 miles to reach the nearest water source.

Regular donations from the club throughout 2020 and into 2021 have provided Act4Africa with funding for specific activities to tackle the spread of coronavirus; support impoverished communities during lockdown; and provide stability to our ongoing programmes.

Most recently Act4Africa have been working in a village a few miles from our community centre in Mayuge District, Eastern Uganda, to bring a sustainable supply of clean water to people there for the first time. COVID-19 has increased the urgent need to improve global access to clean water. Thanks to Bowdon Business Club and donations to our COVID-19 response appeal, we have begun a programme of activities to install a standpipe bringing fresh water to the village. We have nearly reached our fundraising target, but we still need £1000 to achieve our goal. A sustainable clean water source plays a vital role in reducing the spread of infectious diseases like Coronavirus, Diarrhoea, Typhoid and Hepatitis A.

Since the first confirmed case of COVID-19 in Uganda on 22nd March 2020, the Government and Ministry of Health have been working to support district health teams across the country in their efforts to continue to provide essential services, but it is often the case that information, supplies and infrastructure, simply don’t reach rural communities. Non-government organisations, like Act4Africa tirelessly support District health teams in their effort to keep communities safe and informed.

In poverty-stricken rural communities there is a dangerous information gap regarding the coronavirus. Here, harmful myths are spread in the absence of knowledge. Thanks to Bowdon Business Club, within weeks of the first COVID outbreak in Uganda, Act4Africa were able to provide Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) to rural district health facilities that had no such resources. We were also able to provide far-reaching life-saving information to the community.

“Sincere thanks go to the Bowdon Business Club for this timely contribution. Our deliveries to the resource-limited rural health centre make an enormous difference to the day-to-day running of services at the front-line. It is an honour to have the opportunity, as an NGO, to play such a key role in public health, contributing to the safety and well-being of the community.”

Patrick Kigongo, Uganda Country Manager, who thanks to the Business Club moving to Zoom over the past year, has been able to join members to update them on Act4Africa’s programmes live from Uganda.

There has been extreme demand worldwide for PPE throughout the pandemic, especially for those who need it most in health and social care roles. With funding from Bowdon Business Club, Act4Africa procured the following much-needed supplies which were delivered to the Mayuge District Health Office by Patrick and Act4Africa colleague Jennifer on 9thApril 2020:

  • 300 pairs of surgical gloves
  • 150 facial masks
  • 40 pocket hand sanitizers
  • 10 bottles of one-litre sanitizers

These items were then distributed to various health teams in need. The district health officer delivered a speech in which he thanked Act4Africa for our support in these trying times, highlighting the importance of gloves and masks for health workers that desperately need protection to continue their selfless work.

After successfully delivering the PPE, Patrick and Act4Africa Field Officer, Harriet, went on to represent Act4Africa on popular local radio station Baba FM, alongside the District Health Educator. The talk show included a 15-minute segment of discussion surrounding COVID-19, which included do’s and don’ts, a Q&A session and highlights of how Act4Africa is collaborating with Mayuge District to support COVID-19 efforts.

Feedback from radio callers proved the information had been helpful to listeners of the show and provided clarification regarding misconceptions held by some about the availability of a cure for COVID-19.

One of Act4Africa's main aims is to improve access to education for children under 6 and girls of all ages. With schools still closed for majority classes in Uganda, thanks to Bowdon Business Club, we continue to deliver home-learning packs to our beneficiaries, together with hygiene materials and food for their families.

“In these unprecedented times, charities more than ever need our support. Their work does not cease, volunteers are constantly needed, and basic items still need to be bought.

For those whom hardship is normality, life is getting even harder. Since the start of the pandemic, Bowdon Business Club has donated £1,750 to each of their 4 supported charities to help them in these unbelievably hard times. If you can help with a donation, however small, please consider it.”

Mark Haywood, Bowdon Business Club

318 (Sale) Squadron ATC

The Squadron is one of 36 Squadrons in the Greater Manchester Wing of the Air Cadets which has about 1400 cadets and is the largest Wing in the organisation.

318 Squadron is one of the largest in the wing and has fifty four cadets.

Young boys and girls can join at the age of twelve and stay until they are eighteen but can then become staff cadets until they are twenty.

The motto of the Air Training Corps is “Venture Adventure” and one of its main aims is ‘To foster the spirit of adventure and develop qualities of leadership and good citizenship.’

The activities that the cadets can take part in are wide and varied. Of course the most unique is the flying experience they can have. The more able cadets can be awarded flying scholarships and we regularly have cadets flying solo by the time they are sixteen.

In order to progress in the squadron all cadets study the history of the RAF, the Air Cadets and aviation. These studies can lead to a BTEC award.

Other activities include The Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme, shooting, most sports, drill, leadership training, first aid and heart start and adventure camps.

Sale Squadron also organise overseas trips and for the last ten years we have taken cadets to the Belgium and France Battlefields and taught them the history of WW1, on each occasion they have paraded at the Menin Gate Memorial . Over the last two years we have also taken them to Gdansk in Poland where the WW2 started. They parade at the War Memorial there at 04.15 on the 1st September to mark the start of the war. The cadets are treated as VIP’s. The first year the Polish Prime minister came and shook hands with each cadet and last year the Defence Minister did the same.

Photo details

The Westerplatte, Malbork & Gdansk labelled ones were taken in Poland. The actual RAF 318 squadron was a Polish fighter reconnaissance unit active in support of the 2nd (Polish) Army in the Middle east & Italy during the war. All Polish fighter squadrons were named after cities, 318 was named after the city of Gdansk & it’s full title was 318 (Gdanski) Sqn. My fellow instructor was the driving force in setting up links with the Mayor of Gdansk’s office whilst I helped organise a visit to the Polish Air Force base at Malbork & made the model Spitfire in 318 Squadron colours. This was presented to the director of the Gdansk WW2 Museum. We have had 2 trips to Gdansk, both times we have been guests of the Mayor of Gdansk at the “First Shots” commemoration which remembers the very first actions of WW2 which took place at the Westerplatte peninsula, near Gdansk, on September 1st 1939.

The Coningsby photos were taken during a visit to the Battle of Britain memorial Flight at RAF Coningsby, Sports was taken at Wing Training Day. The 2 Somme photographs were taken during our annual battlefield tour to Belgium & the Somme, which we have been undertaking for the last 10 years. This year we are going to Normandy.

The Squadron always takes part in the Battle of Britain & Remembrance Day parades & is an enthusiastic supporter of Red Nose Day, the photo being taken when cadets & staff of the Squadron donated their time for a charity bag pack at Sainsburys in Altrincham.
